Well, it’s because the streets of Gemmayzeh used to be full of trees called Ficus Sycomorus in Latin, and ..Gemmayz in Arabic! 

These trees are among the oldest known to the world; the Egyptians used to cultivate them, as early as in the 3rd millennium BC. 

The trees used to provide a very much appreciated shade to the streets of Gemmayzeh. Unfortunately, very few remain unscathed, as they have been cut down to be replaced by buildings and high rises.
