Welcome to Lebanon…Oregon, USA!

There are more than 50 towns, counties, places and communities across the United States that are called Lebanon. Most of them got their names from America’s earliest settlers who were devout Christians and wanted to name their places after locations mentioned in the Bible.

If you roam the US, you’ll also find cities called Damascus, Hebron, Antioch, Bethlehem, etc. Some of the US Lebanons are more aptly named than others as they are located near a cedar forest.

In 1955, Lebanon (the country) invited all the mayors of the US cities named Lebanon to visit Beirut and presented them with cedar trees to bring back home. These trees still stand in the town squares of the US Lebanons.

By the way, the Lebanon featured in the picture is a city with a population of 16,878 inhabitants and a Mayor called Paul Aziz. If anyone knows if he’s from Lebanese descent, please let us know! 🙂
